To the Land of Drink

April 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Boring life

On Sunday night, I texted my favorite cousin and declared it to be a “Sunday Funday,” which meant that we were going go out for a few cocktails and socializing. She was on board, but texted back with a very difficult question: Where should we go?

I didn’t know how to answer that. But it got me thinking… Where should we go? Milwaukee has a lot of bars. We ended up at the Fin & Feather on Loomis in Greenfield, which has everything I look for in a bar.

Here are important things to consider when selecting a bar:
1. Diversity in age: I don’t want a bar that’s full of only 21-year-olds or 50-year-olds. A nice mixture, please. At Fins, there were youngsters and old-timers. There was even a 60-something-year-old lady with a bouffant, a cigarette hanging from her lips and a lap dog.
2. Games: Not just pool and darts. My favorites are foosball and air hockey. Trivia is a bonus, but not necessary.
3. Cheap booze: Most nights, I’m not looking for $9 flirtinis. Actually, I’m never looking for $9 flirtinis. A double Captain and Diet with a lime at about $6 a throw is good.
4. Availability of food: Fins has a popcorn machine. I didn’t actually eat any, but it’s comforting to know it was there.
5. Music: A jukebox that doesn’t suck is preferred. When I’m out, I’m mostly looking for a the good sing-along songs and not what I typically listen to on a given day (except for the Beatles — I always listen to the Beatles). “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” by David Allan Coe did the trick on Sunday. And a little Styx. Some Beatles. Maybe some of The Boss. Jovi.
6. Cute, not creepy boys: I’m single … what can I say?

Wednesday is Mid-Week Bender, but I’m not feeling the greatest — I think I caught whatever stomach bug that is going around. So, it may have to be rescheduled.

    “$6 a throw!?”

Jeezus. Back in my day, I was loathe to go anywhere that didn’t have 25-cent tappers.
